The Nikkei 225 (NI225) is the most important and the most widely quoted index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE), the world’s second stock exchange by market capitalization after the New York Stock Exchange. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper has been calculating the NI225 index since 1950, based on a price-weighted average of 225 top-traded Japanese companies. The list of companies is reviewed once a year, in October. Sharp rises and drops set the Nikkei 225 apart from other stock indexes and make it the most unstable and fastest-growing stock index worldwide.
